Social change and World Peace through TM

Social change and World Peace through TM

Most of the people who learn meditation do not hold creating world peace as the main reason for practising it. Yet this was Maharishi’s goal when he first introduced Transcendental Meditation in 1958, emphasising that individual peace is the basic unit of world peace. He used the analogy that just as there cannot be a green forest without green trees, there cannot be a peaceful world without peaceful individuals.

Even though there are many sincere individuals dedicated to the cause of peace, establishing peace requires more than simply adopting a psychological belief in peace. It can only be achieved through a transformation at the very deepest level of the human mind and through a corresponding change in the physiology. Maharishi explained that when the mind and body are deeply at peace, then thought, speech and action will spontaneously radiate an influence of harmony into the environment.

Maharishi Effect for World PeaceIn the 1960s Maharishi made a prediction: “If only 1% of the population of a city or country would learn to transcend regularly, a measurable effect would be created in the society“. This was confirmed in 1974 by scientific studies and the scientists named 1% effect as “Maharishi Effect”.

TM accesses the collective consciousness

Research shows that people practising Transcendental Meditation and the advanced TM-Sidhi technique, experience very high brain wave coherence or brain wave orderliness during their meditation.

But that is not all, the enhanced coherence seen in these individuals also creates coherence in the collective consciousness, and generates a unifying and integrating effect in the life of society. This effect results in a decrease of negative trends such as crime, terrorist activity, accidents, and sickness and an increase in positive social, economic, and political trends.

Increasing coherence in collective consciousness

Extended Maharishi Effect for World PeaceExtensive research published in leading scientific journals demonstrates that the powerful, stress-reducing effect of Transcendental Meditation has a calming “spill-over” effect in the surrounding population. The effect is especially powerful when a number of meditators equivalent to the square root of 1% of a population practice the more advanced technique of the TM-Sidhi meditation programme together in the same place and at the same time. The research has shown a dramatic and immediate shift in the collective consciousness resulting in reduction in societal stress, crime, violence, and conflict – and an increase in coherence, positivity, and peace in society as a whole.

In short:

Coherent collective consciousness = higher quality of life, more life supporting, more positive, more evolutionary trends in the society.
Incoherent collective consciousness = more negative, destructive, life damaging trends in the society.

What do we mean by a collective consciousness?

In simple terms, modern physics now recognises more and more that the basic building block of the universe is what is known as a ‘Unified Field’ that encompasses within it all matter fields and energy fields; in fact all the laws of nature. And there is a growing understanding too that this unified field is also a field of consciousness or field of pure intelligence.

Given that each and every one of us is both part of and connected by this unified field then it follows that every action, even every individual thought, influences every other thing in the universe. So whenever our individual awareness dives down and settles at the level of pure consciousness, during the practice of Transcendental Meditation, we not only create a calming, harmonising effect for ourselves but also a calming and harmonising influence for all people everywhere. In other words it isn’t just our individual consciousness that gets affected, but the consciousness of everyone else as well.

Dr John Hagelin, a world renowned quantum physicist, explains how we are all intimately connected by a unified field of consciousness and that this field expresses infinite dynamic intelligence that is the basis of all of creation.

“This work deserves the most serious consideration.”

“The claim can be plausibly made that the potential impact of this research exceeds that of any other on-going social or psychological research program. The research has survived a broader array of statistical tests than most research in the field of conflict resolution. I think this work, and the theory that informs it, deserve the most serious consideration by academics and policy makers alike.”
– David Edwards, PhD, Professor of Government at the University of Texas at Austin

Since the discovery of the effect of these Yogic Flyers in the 80s, Maharishi only had one more goal for his global organisation – to as quickly as possible create groups of Yogic Flyers large enough to create a positive effect for every country and, moreover, a number of super-groups large enough to create an effect for the entire world. So long as governments didn’t support these groups, funds of the TM organisation as well as donor money, was being used for this purpose. If someone, therefore, pays a course fee to learn Transcendental Meditation, he directly contributes to a bigger purpose for the entire world.

The TM organisation is currently building a super group of 9,000 Vedic experts in the heart of India, where they have purchased 800 acres of land to build an entire town. Currently 1500 experts are present there and receive a salary in order to create an effect all day long. Their salary is paid by the TM organisation and through gifts from donors.

If it is possible to effectively implement this technology on a personal level in society, then everyone will benefit from the social effects ‘for free’.
There are many ways to get groups of Yogic Flyers together in every country, for example through education where schoolchildren practice the technique before and after their school day, in businesses where employees practice Yogic Flying as part of their work routine, in police projects where the police spend more time preventing crimes rather than dealing with their after effects, in prison projects where TM and Yogic Flying are used for the personal rehabilitation of the prisoner or in establishing a prevention wing of the military as is happening in a number of countries.
